Creative media -films, music, books – have a way of captivating us, taking us to places that we can barely begin to imagine. Parables have always helped us to remember to learn from our past but can we use them to inspire our futures?
Films have, with very little success, approached the issue of climate. Waterworld, Avatar, Tank Girl are a couple of films that come to mind though there are many more that deal with eenvironmentalissues.
The trailer for Young Ones, a new film starring Michael Shannon (he of Man of Steel, The Iceman and Boardwalk Empire fame) is based in a world where the water is running out. Far fetched one might say, but dig deeper into the malaise in Syria and there is a link to the governments failure to deal with the drought between 2006 and 2011. The consequences of that fallout is worse than anything Hollywood could ever deliver.
It doesn’t have to be that way.
